Literature Text

remembering the color of your eyes
was like reading the book
and not watching the movie,
the way they look in my head
will never compare to the way you wear them
in real life, blinking and moving and living, alive,
hazel and green and brown and...
is that right? hazel and green and brown and...
dead, like the leaves, you matched.

you existed in fog and in cigarette exhales,
anything to cloud your weary mind for a time
forgetting names and faces and kisses
and sometimes its fun to pretend
like i even knew you before you were gone
all you were was a half page chapter
maybe a side plot forgotten by our author
much too early in our series
the one they skip over in the synopsis
the undeveloped and underrated character you were
a ghost among faces but a face among ghosts
a shadow in the voices
of friends who try to forget you

i wanted to save you.
but writers are selfish.
i accidentally reminded myself of a friend who is long gone and it seems this is what came of it.
rest in peace, man. you were inspired by dead poets, now you are a dead poet, and inspiring me everyday even more than a year after.

This a great tribute. That's only four years older than my son. I'm sorry for your loss.
